Hi all,

I'm taking an airplane trip and want to take my "Mini Mac Light" balloon pump with me.  It's 34" tall and weighs about 4.5lbs.  They told me I can't take it as a carry on but I'm afraid to check it.  I don't want it getting destroys with all the other luggage.  Does anyone have advice on how to transport a balloon pump safely?

Thanks...Cindy

Hi Cindy I travel quite a bit but just take the smaller qualatex pumps as I know the big one will get damaged.? I know this doesn't help but I am not sure there is an easy way apart from disassembly and bubble wrap in a check in bag.

Thanks Rob, I just ordered a big duffle bag and I'm going to try and pack it well.  I'm probably going to regret it, but I'm going to give it a shot.  I'll take my smaller pumps as back ups.  The trip is in a few weeks, keep your fingers crossed for me.

Thanks again,
Cindy

Hope all goes well on your trip Cindy, and you have a great time.

There is a floor pump where the up and down piston bit unscrews, to make the pump fit in a case suitable size for aircraft hand luggage.

It is the one where the balloon shoots out horizontally rather than vertically. I will try and find a link to it for you  :D

Thanks Kevin, I wish I would have waited before ordering the duffle bag.  This seems like a better alternative.  If my trip works out for me, I might invest in this packable little beauty.

Cindy, did they tell you why you can't take it as carryon?
I bought one for an upcoming trip, but can't find a suitcase in New Zealand that is large enough to take it.  Plan B was to take off top and bottom and put it in a larger tube with a handle.  As long as it still fits within the total dimensions of carryon for the airline, should work?

Hi Lisa,
Yes...they told me that it could be used as a weapon...like a bat.  So the only way they would allow it, was to check it in with the other luggage.

Oh dear  May I ask who you asked?  Airline/travel agent??  Must make sure my airline doesn't think the same!!

I asked the TSA agent.  We have a small airport right near me, so I stopped and asked.  Maybe you could ask a travel agent, they might be able to help you.  Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

I'd be tempted to fight it as can say it's needed for work. I'm sure sportsmen like snooker players can take their cues on with them and that can be used as a weapon. Well theoretically anything can be.used as a weapon.

I talked to a travel agent who spoke to the airline.  It will probable be allowed to go cabin luggage (size wise) but I might get asked to check it.  Have decided to get a larger tube to pack it inside, with secure ends and take as checked luggage.  Not worth th hassle of not knowing.

Good luck with yours Cindy!!  Pack it well!!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YGc4zOqozo
