Have you seen this idea from Holly Hopper

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_k9s3o9Pbgo

Really like the idea and am tempted to buy some designs.

All very lovely if those are the sculptures you make, I can't say I have ever watched a Holly Hopper video so these would only be of any use if I made the same designs.

Its an interesting idea and they look great but I think I would go down the route of making them up for my own sculptures rather than go through the process of watching any Holly Hopper videos.

I saw them last week and my thoughts were..........why not take an actual picture of the design you made and have those as your menu.
People would actually see what they were getting, I'm the same as Rob, never sat and watched a tutorial from Holly. I did watch her song with the balloons as props, that is worth a watch.

Yes Graham, your right, why not take the photos of the actual balloon, that is what I do and then people know exactly what they are getting, the more I think about the cartoon idea the more I dislike it, I also have the issue that IF you are doing those designs of Holly Hoppers then you are a Holly-Hopperite (I couldn't think of a better phrase for a group of people who just do Holly Hopper designs) where is the individuality? its almost like a franchise, you do the Holly Hopper design and have the Holly Hopper artwork, why not go the whole hog and wear the dress too?

Sorry, that all sounds very negative and I didnt mean it to be.

Where do I sign up?

But seriously, I do get your point. It's not that I want to be a Holly-Hopperite (great word) as although I have learnt twisting from Youtube (Holly, Michael Floyd, Unicaw, plus others) I am sold on the idea of having a cartoon image to display on a menu. I think a menu is a great idea as it helps me as a newbie just as much as it shows the customers what they can choose from.

I have taken photos in the past of designs, but still can't get a consistant and professional looking result that I'm happy with. I wonder what costs would be involved in getting a artist to draw a bunch of images for me? Time to have a look through fiverr and peopleperhour maybe?

Here is a thought that has just come to me. What do you think about the idea of actually having those good quality photos for your menu? Would you be interested?

On another note I'm going for a red and black polkadot dress, I think those are my colours :-)

I'm not sure really, I do have some half decent photo gear that I could take the time to try and get the shot I want. I think I was just up for the idea of having them in a cartoon style.

My suggestions is then go for it, if that is what you would like. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I'm just about to sort myself out some new portfolio books as I just forget all the designs so will take some books along and will offer so many more designs.
I will just take pictures with my new set up against the radiator, either a red or white background. I think that will work OK.

So I have been thinking about this all day and I just got home and decided to have a go at doing a little bit of creating, Now this is based on one of the designs I sometimes make, in fact I will include the original photo too so you can see. but my plan was to turn one of my pictures into a cartoon, anyway, I did this in a very small amount of time and it is thrown together and a bit messy but I wondered what everyone thought, its nothing like Holly Hoppers but then it was not planning for it to be like hers.

So, what are your thoughts on this? better than the photo, worse that the photo or about the same?

Not to sit on the fence here but I think it's swings and roundabouts.

Just had another look and from the cartoon I suppose they get another treat that the cartoon then turns into the final product so there is an extra step along the way to build up the excitement to the finished product.

Hmmm thats true, its almost like your bringing the cartoon to life. I am still not sure about the idea BUT it must be saying something to me as I keep wanting to play with the idea.

I just had another go with what I thought might be a simpler method but its come out looking a bit . . .whats the word? . . . . its on the tip of my tongue . . . Stylised maybe? but not in a good way. it's too blocky.

They are great Rob. Commenting solely on the first one vs the photo I think the cartoon is the one I prefer. A display (or menu) with these would be more appealing to the children than photos in my opinion.

I did ask my other half last night to have a go too, and although her artistic skills are far far better than mine, I still wasn't happy with the result. I think this will just end up as a pipe dream for me as I'd probably end up having to comission someone to do it for me and I dare say way too expensive to be viable.
