Dvds v. Downloads
Graham's mention of the last Dave Brenion Backpacks DVD made me wonder how many people prefer downloads to DVDs.
I find I rarely look at downloads, and much prefer DVDs.
Which do you like best?

It will be an age issue Ian, all us oldies will vote for a good old DVD in the hand and the youngsters will prefer a download.

That is my guess.

I'd prefer downloads too, easy to watch on various devices and I'd have to use the laptop anyway to watch a DVD.

There are pros and cons to both.
Downloads 'arrive' when you have ordered them. No waiting. Although, if ordering from Graham, DVDs arrive the next day anyway.

DVDs don't take up space on they hard drive, whereas downloads will do. For me, this is the biggest con for downloads. As a twisting newbie, I want to learn as much as I can but I'm restricted to the number of downloads because I only have a finite amount of space on my computer.

DVDs all the way, the problem with downloads is that I feel I am missing out on something, I like have an actual physical product to show for my money, if its a digital download then it feels I have nothing to show for it.

I am not young....but still prefer download.
yes, long waiting time is the main reason that I don't prefer DVD. Had bad experience waited 3 weeks before I received my order...

How about having the best of both worlds?  Order the DVD, rip it so you can view it on any device.  Have both. Be happy!

I don't think that is legal, Lynnae.

I'm with you,  Lynnae!  Either buy the DVD and copy it to your PC or else you could buy the pdf and copy it to a DVD for off-line storage.  And if the DVD is not copy-protected, I purchased the DVD, and I'm only copying it so that I can view it in a convenient format/on a convenient device (and only copying it for myself), I see nothing wrong in copying it.  I think the only legal problem is when you are copying it and either selling or giving it to someone else.

I would have thought copying to your computer would be ok to make life easier when viewing,
but then perhaps the problem arises if you then sold the said DVD.

I must start watching my DVD collection again, some I bought are still in the vinyl wrappers.

I agree with copying it for your own use only. Or you could by more external storage specifically for DVD downloads, PDF's, photos and so on.

I prefer downloads but I still have quite a few DVDs which I need to watch! Some people are still making DVDs - I've just bought Matt Falloons "Pico's" concept DVD. So if the content is good I'm happy to buy any format.

I copy all my DVDs to my PC, but split into a different file for each balloon model.  That way if I need a cat, for example, I can search my PC balloon directory for "cat" and see all cat videos along with any Word or pdf documents that I have for cat balloon sculptures.

That sounds like a pretty good idea, do you need a special programme to split the DVD up into sections?

I have changed to downloads.  Mainly because I now offer a pick and mix option so you can pick something from any of my compilations and have just the ones you want.  I would not be able to offer this with the discs.  Also it means people a long distance get it not only quicker but don't have the problem of postage and import tax.  Also I don't see why the disc is an issue because once you have purchased and received a download you can easily burn it onto a disc for your physical collection.  Job's a goodun!

I do think any download should be backed up with a disc by the way.  I occasionally get emails from people saying they have lost their download for one reason or another and I am happy to re-send stuff to them.  Here is my age coming through a bit I suppose, I don't totally trust downloads.  I want something I can pick up and put on a shelf with my other instructions.  Then no matter what happens its still there.  Unless my house burns down of course!
