Title: Support "Balloon Chat" DVD?
Post by: Graham Lee on June 16, 2012, 03:09:42 PM
I was thinking about bringing out a DVD of some of the models I have put onto the forum over the years, 5 easy'ish, 5 a little more advanced and maybe 5 model of the months
with a bonus helicopter that I make in the real world that does get great reactions. The idea would be to raise a few pennies to help run the forum and then any over could go
towards helping BAG days as we have not enough members to break even as yet.
I was thinking of charging £27.50 incuding postage so with the cost to make, post etc there would be approx £20 profit going towards the forum and BAG.

Suggestions are welcome to if you think this maybe a good or bad idea, if good what models would it be an idea to put onto the DVD.

I would buy one, although I think the postage would have to be over and above to ship to Canada.  Don't mind paying extra to support BAG since it seems pointless for me to join from way over here.

I would offer £27.50 without the DVD as I get more than this in value by just being a member of the forum.

The DVD is a good idea but if the instructions are already on the forum is it worth you going to all the trouble?

If only half the members here donate £5 a year that's about £1500? Surely everyone gets more than £5 back in value?

What about a forum section that has some extra designs, articles, marketing tips etc for paid members. Again a small amount. I am sure enough of us could think of something useful to add.

Just thinking whilst I wait for my kebab!

Not all the models have instructions on how to make them and also I would be revisiting the models so may have some adaptions/ammendments/upgrades and I was looking to give people something back for their money rather than have just a donate button. I may be tempted to put in an extra model or two that is not as yet posted onto the forum and we may have a guest section as well on the DVD. Some may give me a model to add to the DVD as well, a little bonus surprise section. Who knows, just a few thoughts that are going through my head at the moment.

Being in the USA, it would probably cost me too much to get a DVD shipped.  I'd be more than happy to donate a bit though, as I love this forum!

We do have overseas members, you still get the three DVD's from the star lecture days at no extra cost, just £99. Last year it was David Brenion, Dennis Hogers and Ken Stillman.
This year, Shirley Ray & Colin Myles, Patrick van de Ven and Ed Chee. All DVD's have a wealth of material on them.

The cost of £27.50 will include shipping worldwide if this is the price we settle on.

How about making a paid membership option and offering the videos for online viewing/download to those who pay for a membership. You could also offer the star lecture DVDs in this format.
Or you could just offer the videos individually on line for a smaller price?

I think that David's idea is great!!! I loved the opportunity to access his tutorials instantly online, and if this forum had a membership fee with online access to content I would be happy to pay for an annual membership.

I like Dave Brenion's idea, too. As you know, Ken Stillman has a $10 per month Gold Membership on Balloonclick which gives access to videos. This works out around £6.50 a month and is well worth it.

The only problem with the video streaming is that I would need to find someone to do this for me as I would not have a clue. I like the idea of a DVD as I can sort this out myself with the help of Lord G sorting out the editing for me. Those that wish to help with the costs can and will receive something in return rather than just having a donation button. Don't forget I am a bit old school and stuck in my ways. I have always said that the forum would be free so to have a section or the whole site chargable would not sit happy with me and I would not have the time to keep adding new models and new idea's and technique's to the site. It would always be judged where as the way the forum is at the moment is fine, it has it's ups and downs, sometimes busy and sometimes a little quiet. Thanks to all the thoughts and ideas put up here and sent to me privately, appreciated.

I think the idea of keeping it free is great (is quite impressive is free and without ads) -  I would say that the forum could be used a bit more to try get people to join BAG though -  as a new person on the site within the forum it isn't really explained what BAG is (I know it is on front page of site, but if you access the forum from a device using Tapatalk etc you don't go through this page) - and also more of an explanation of how it would work for overseas members .   It is already probably in there but is in various threads, and I think a sticky thread which isn't open to comments might work better (if there is one I haven't managed to find it via search).  I am on a different forum (non-balloon related) and it is in the main free but also has a paid element, that bit is quite well explained within the forum itself.

While walking along the South Bank with Danny, Lyn, Roger and Tonya on Friday night a good suggestion was brought up by Danny & Roger about the DVD could take the format of friends of balloon chat and we got a few people to put a model each onto the DVD similar to the friends of David Grist DVD that is out. I liked the idea, any volunteers? I will try to film a few people at the memorial lecture in July if there are any takers. Anyone can film and send the contents over so we can edit it into the master copy.

That's an interesting idea. Which ever way it was done I would be happy to pay for one to support this site.  Lets face it, if we come on here regularly to get ideas and to indulge in participating with other balloon mad people we would miss it if it were no longer here.  I have checked out a number of balloon forums in the past and this is my favourite for a number of reasons.  For one thing it is policed but not over policed.  Common sence prevails. I could go into the other reasons but I dont want to slag other forums off.  But I did get very disillusioned with one in particular.

I just think if we benefit from this forum we should support it in some way.  So yes I'm up for a payment and getting a dvd in return.

I love the BAG dvds by the way.  Great to know I won't miss any of the great balloon twisters even if I can't be there.

Thelma.

Dear All,

A DVD is a wonderful idea especially if other members get a chance to contribute a design. My only concern is the lack of interest/support/commitment from other members. Of the 700 or so members, less than 10 people have responded and shown interest in purchasing a DVD to support the forums!

Graham, how about taking pre-orders then at least you will know whether the project is worth the effort?

Come on guys, if you are one of those silent members who continually take the free ideas and advice offered on these forums, at least respond and say whether this DVD is of interest to you or not.

It's OK Darren I get used to the silence  ;)  :D
Some just like to look and view and I fancy making another DVD, it keeps me occupied and if I put the helicopter on it the DVD will be worth it just for that alone as when I make it in the real world it always gets a round of applause.

Balloon Chat site is a huge help and would be willing to donate for sure.
The fact I would get a DVD is a bonus.  :D

I must have missed this one the first time around. I think that this is a great idea and would be happy to help in any way I can. This forum is fantastic and if it wasn't for the seeming tireless work put in by all I wouldn't have got to where I am today. The Dvd's are a great way of revisiting the lecture day's as it's sometimes very hard to remember all that you have covered. If there is enough takers could this be an extra incentive for those still thinking about joining up?
