Title: The Balloon Artistes Guild Logo
Post by: magirob on March 29, 2013, 11:51:23 AM
Hi All

I have been having a play about with a logo for the Balloon Artistes Guild, there was a competition a couple of years ago
//http://balloonchat.co.uk/win-free-bag-membership-t4526.html?hilit=t

I am not sure if anything came of it so I asked Graham if he minded me coming up with a design.

So here is a design, have a look, this is just a first version.

Do you have any suggestions? is there anything you like or dislike?
Graham has given me a few suggestions to work with already

Rob

This is what I sent to Rob,

Looks simple and smart, is it all central? The dog looks higher at the back legs than front.

The balloons around the outside, could we have brighter colours? OR

Maybe the outside balloons could all be yellow or white and the name put onto them so the dog image could be larger in the centre.

Trouble is once you start there are 1000's of other options and ideas

but it is nice you are spending a little time on it.

you could post on the forum but then you would get another 1000 suggestions, well maybe two actually as the forum seems pretty quiet to me at the moment.

Maybe just the three primary colours should be used?
I think a can of worms may have been opened but it would be nice to get a logo and then maybe we could have some mugs, badges and T shirts made up

Another version

I was waiting to see if anyone else was going to comment, looks like no so here we go.

On the original dog design in a colour there is shading that is lost with just White and yes I suggested the White, so if we tried Yellow we would get shading and the 3 primary colours.
Maybe have the font in Yellow as well?

I re-sized it smaller to see how clear it is to read, the Yellow text may stand out more or maybe the text could be a little bigger?

good plan Graham, I think it needs a bit of yellow too, were getting there :-)

Here is another update, I tried to make the writing as big as possible, I could make it bigger by making the balloon background wider if need :o)

A small version

GL admin, I added the small White one to compare next to it

I think it stands out so much more with Yellow, do you? Anyone?
Can the dog have shading Rob? is this difficult or would it be better the solid Yellow?

Would the Yellow text stand out more if it did not have the Black outline but a Yellow out line? Would make it look bigger maybe.

Post by: magirob on March 30, 2013, 10:49:12 PM
Yes the Dog can have shading, I actually forgot to put it on but I did intend to put the shading on from the beginning, thank you for reminding me :D

Ahh I never thought about making black outline into yellow, what a good idea, it does look good in Yellow tho

Does anyone else have any ideas or thoughts?

Hi

I like it and it stands out nicely. The two colour ring is much better than the alternating two colour ring which reminded me of one of those life saving rings! My only question is did you ever think of any other balloon creation apart from the dog. I remember in Stanstead Graham showed his favourite one balloon flower like design..

Just a thought

Great, I don't think Jeff Koons will sue us, our dog has a longer tail than his :-)  and the balloon dog was around years before he borrowed it

I used the dog design for a couple of reasons,
1 - it is Grahams so it was handy to use as I only had to ask for Grahams permission to use it.
2 - the dog seems to be the universal sculpture for balloon modellers, the one sculpture we all usually learn to start with and the one that members of public ask for mostly :-)

saying that, I am happy to work with some other ideas :-D

Here's my tuppence ha'penny worth...

For me Artiste is a French word for Artist. I think there are a couple of definitions and Artistes is ok, but for clarity personally I would prefer
The Balloon Artists Guild.

You can take E or leave E!  :)

Secondly, I don't like the black on the background - its very dark! I think its ok with the white lettering and white dog. But I prefer something very colourful to represent a colourful art and guild! I'm not sure what to suggest in place of black though.

Lastly, Rob you're doing a great job, thank you!  :D

I apologise in advance for my comments....

A balloon dog is universally recognisable to the general public who have become accustomed to seeing balloon 'artists' churn out dogs, swords, giraffes and sellotaped balloon hearts. Whilst The Balloon Artists Guild (I agree with Danny) is about promoting and improving our art form for people of all abilities, I do feel the 'balloon dog' doesn't symbolise the creativity and talent of everyone here. Even with the beginner classes I have seen of Graham's he starts with a rabbit or maybe a flower.

Rob, I fully appreciate all your time and effort and I do not mean to be critical of you, believe me, but it does look very homemade and probably isn't something that I would want to have on a t-shirt or my coffee mug.

Maybe we should come up with a list of things that the Balloon Artist Guild stands for and use that list to create a logo.

p.s. can you tell I hate balloon dogs

p.p.s. - don't anyone jump down my throat for sharing my views.

fair comments from both of you, I totally understand and respect those comments, maybe Graham was right on the fact that I have opened a bag of worms :-)

my original idea for the logo was for people to display on their websites and advertising to show they were a member of the guild.

Maybe we should leave it then?

I have no issues either way :-)

PS I hate balloon dogs too, he he

Rob,

I think a logo is a brilliant idea and would be very proud to display it on my website and marketing material but it would need to be the same type quality graphics.

Don't give up - I am probably a lone voice here and there are many other members who may want to use it.

Maybe we should have a can of balloon worms in the middle ;-)
Title: Re: The Balloon Artistes Guild Logo

well I think the problem is that there are few images I can think of which are instantly recognisable as a balloon sculpture on such a small logo, I will keep thinking about it :-)

thanks for the input tho, I like the idea of a can of balloon worms :-)

I agree with Darren it has to look (and be) like a top quality logo. However the balloon dog is an iconic image. I'm not sure what else is so instantly recognisable.

Perhaps just the words in balloon letters like Balloon Chat.co.uk? Or like the recently made header for Graham's Balloon Art Wholesale?

This is a really difficult thing to do and I commend you for trying, I did have a think about his a while ago but like a bear with a very small brain I didn't get very far. I find myself agreeing with everyone to some extent or another and think I should try and join in a little more as the guild has given me so much since it started.
Darren is right the image if it's going to be used on websites etc should be a quality picture and something that we as a community would be proud to display everywhere. Also Darren mentions that the idea is that we are aiming to encourage improvement and creativity...but as we all know there is no right and wrong way to make anything As long as we can pursued the customer that what we are giving them is what they are after, we succeed. We all make things differently and it would be really hard to use a 'universal' symbol other than the dog. (p.s. I'm not in love with them either)
Rob is right as I was saying above, the logo needs to be something recognizable and small, I can only think of the one balloon dog or a small flower or maybe even a giraffe (just to save us from Jeff's wrath). We have all made one of these three things in the past, but they unfortunately don't encompass the improvement in our art. It's a toughie isn't it?
Danny is also right Rob you are doing a great job and I don't envy you in what you've taken on.
I think that you're along the right lines but not really sure where you go from here has anyone else got any ideas for Rob to play with? As I don't really seem to come up with much more than what's already been said.

As a non member of BAG, I am going to wade in and hope I don't get shot!
It strikes me that no one will ever truly agree on a design you all think is representative of the amazing art you create, but consider if a guild without a logo is more important than having one.
From what everyone has said so far, may I suggest the primary colour balloons round the edge with a dark interior and the three letters BAG as balloons in the middle. It seems to address concerns over dogs and gets rid of any artist/ artiste confusion.
Just my opinion.
Well done Rob for putting yourself in the firing line. Who knew balloons were so emotive! ;)

Thanks for all the suggestions and thoughts, I am giving it some thinking to try and work out any other ideas but I think it is one of those things where I won't be able to please everyone.

Its been good to see the comments on here so thanks for all of those.

I will continue to think about it and as there is no rush for it and its not desperately needed, something will eventually come up that we will all like :-)

And I guess this is why the logo for the 2012 Olympics cost a few million pounds! It is an incredibly difficult thing to convey meaning and intention with just a single logo.

I have been away for a couple of days but was keeping an eye on this thread, I would have posted if I had my laptop with me but only had my phone which sometimes is a challenge to post a reply on. I was liking the badge, it is only version, I think four, my latest header went through to about 13 before I was happy. I would like to see what the logo would look like with a variety of colours in the centre so that we could post them all and see what one your eye is automatically drawn to. I think just using the three primary colours is a good starting point but am always open to ideas and suggestions. As long as the badge is a starting point for a discussion on balloons with joe public then it has achieved what is required. At least they would see the dog made from balloons the same as if we had the letters made from balloons.

What ever logo we end up with you have to view it as a 1" lapel badge or an inch square on a letter head, so simple and clean while also looking professional are what we are striving for.

Can someone mock up a template with BAG written in the centre out of balloons?

I do have the alphabet already made from balloons on a White background so will see if I can find them on my computer.

I have started to use the logo on both websites to advertise the guild  :)  It is still a work in progress but I thought it looked better than the Bag DVD cover.

Over the past couple of days the designer has been working away, have to say I'm pretty dis-appointed but they are coming into this from a non balloon perspective.
I have been sent a few, this is one of the better ones and maybe we could have a black sausage dog on the red balloon?
I will post some of the others when I get five minutes.

Can I throw my 2 cents in...this is similar to what I use on my business cards.  Use a different color for each letter signifying the colors of the balloons, with a nice swirly font that looks something like a twisted 260.  Just a thought.

I like those two round ones with the text Graham, I think the colours are a bit girlie but they are cool, not sure about the previous ones as the balloons just don't look right in my mind, the text might be hard to read when they are small too but these circular ones look good.

I have gone to plan "C" now and employed a graphic designer, so all input would be gratefully received as we need to find a logo that I wont say all have to like
but maybe the majority and especially Darren  :D

But Rob that was from your original design, I like the contrast with the black and I still think this is the best, at the moment.
The font maybe we could get a little better, I will email the font Cindy posted so he can put that around the outside.

Maybe we put the wording inside the original one Rob made up on the black background with two outer balloons in red and yellow and on the balloons we have,
"We Care, Together We Share"

or perhaps we could have just ends of 350's protruding into the badge centre instead of the round balloons with just two colours alternating red and blue.

My favourite is the one with just the bigger dog in the centre. (number 7)

However I would want the lettering in bold and black, and perhaps without the "the"?

Also I like the red and blue combo of colours (number 5), rather than red and orange for the outside.

Well those are my thoughts!    :)
