Title: Graham Lee DVD 1, Step by Step.
Post by: Graham Lee on September 11, 2015, 11:17:27 PM
Well I watched DVD 1 tonight to decide what to make and guess what? I found two new models, well old models that I had forgotten about.

I think that happened when I reviewed my DVD 3 "A Romantic Twist" So I will post the instructions for a Dolphin, Teddy on a heart and then the Shield.

Now the DVD is 8 years old so I guess I will make a variation on a theme as now to then I expect things might be made slightly differently.

So a dilemma I have, I decided last week to post three models with instructions from everyone of my DVD's. So DVD One that was filmed eight years ago, there is a dolphin that I had completely forgot about. So do I post instructions on how to make the one balloon dolphin as it appears on the DVD, do I post how I would make it now but still using one balloon or
do I post the 3 balloon dolphin I worked out from watching the DVD? Answers on a postcard, he he! The original dolphin is on the right just in case people were unsure.

On DVD 1 there are 15 models, five in the easy section, five in the intermediate and five in the advanced.
The advanced is still basic but a little more challenging than the one balloon models in the basic section.
I called the sections, Basic, Basic Plus and Basic Plus Plus rather than Basic, Intermediate and advanced so keeping to the DVD being for a beginner.

On the DVD explained there are,

Basic, Sausage Dog, Giraffe, Sword, Shield, Ladybird

Basic Plus, Teddy, Teddy Hat, Flower and Vase, Dolphin, Parrot on Swing, Firing Gun

Basic Plus Plus, Teddy on a Heart, Snake, Fish Hat, Duck, Duck Hat, Flower, Flower Hat.

So in the basic section I will explain the shield.

This is the first time I'm explaining the shield this way, before I used to start with a pinch twist which for some is not the easiest of ways to start off.
So hoping this way is a little easier for everyone?

Inflate the 260 balloon and leave a 3 finger section un-inflated. Twist a 9 finger bubble and then a 2 finger pinch twist.

Then twist a 8 finger bubble followed by a 4 finger bubble, (I have tied mine together only so I could take a photograph)

Tie the knot of the balloon into the second pinch twist that is next to the 4 finger bubble.

You then need a 4 finger bubble and an 8 finger bubble for the other side of the shield and twist this into the bottom pinch twist next to the 8 finger bubble.
(Again I ties the twists up just so I could take a photograph.)

The rest of the balloon is for the handle at the back of the shield.

I then twist the end of the balloon back into the top pinch twist.
Sometimes the handle is a little long so I make a bubble at the end of the balloon to twist into the pinch twist rather than deflate the balloon.
Makes for a quicker process if making many.

Then if you wanted to make a fancy shield.

When I make these at a care & share day there are a few comments that the shield is a little on the small side,
in all the years I have been making this the children have never commented on this fact.

But if anyone would like the shield bigger here are a couple of ideas and I did make a two balloon shield elsewhere on the forum so will see if I can find it.

I used the black 260 so you can see easily where this is attached, by changing the size of the twists at the top will change the look as well.
In black it looks a little batman like to me.

Another two balloon shield and all together.

So next week I will post the instructions for the dolphin, not sure if the original from the DVD or a variation of one of the ones here in the picture.
Unsure at the moment.

If anyone does make the shield then please post your variation as it's always nice to see, thanks.

I was not sure what to do here, weather to go with the original design or the three balloon version I made up from it.
Well I was going to make the new one balloon model below but last night I made a one balloon dolphin from a 160 and this morning I have a new
version of a one balloon dolphin from a 260 so I will be posting this and being more true to the original DVD design.

The first picture is the dolphin on the DVD, on the other one I added eyes and a pinch twist before the tail. It is only sitting on the clear balloon so I could get a better picture.

This is the 160 dolphin I made last night.

And this morning the new one balloon dolphin from a 260 balloon, I will post the instructions for this one later,
sometimes it's good to go back and re-visit old DVD's or designs you made a while back as you have new inspirations than when you first viewed or made them.

We need to do a little pre-stretch on the balloon as we need it to do a lot to make the dolphin, so pull the balloon between finger and thumb to stretch and then inflate the balloon leaving a 7 finger bubble.
Again stretch the balloon through the hand and I also rolled the knot of the balloon towards the end to get another 2 fingers in length.

Make a 3 finger and 2 finger bubble and tie the knot around the second twist and through between the two bubbles.

You then need a 4 finger bubble and a 2 finger pinch twist.

Then make two 3 finger bubbles and another 2 finger pinch twist.

Then make a 4 finger bubble and twist this into the dolphins mouth section.

You will now make the eyes which are two 2 finger bubbles and twist around the mouth section again.

The top of the dolphin I made a 7 finger bubble and twisted this into and around between the two 3 finger bubbles made earlier.

The fin for the dolphin is a 4 finger and a 2 finger bubble twisted back between the two 3 finger bubbles.

I had a 6 finger bubble for the back section of the dolphin and then twisted a 2 finger bubble right at the end of the 260 balloon and looped this back to the twist for the 6 finger bubble.

The rear loop will vary from model to model, you split the loop into two.

Twist the two finger bubble into the centre twist of the loop that will be the dolphin's tail.

The dolphin will not sit correct,
I pushed the top twist of the dolphin below the two centre fin bubbles and between the two 3 finger bubbles,
then shock twisted the rear section of the start of the tail up so the dolphin flowed.

Then add the eyes,
you may need to try a few times with bubble size and how much to leave un-inflated on the dolphin but please try a few times and if you do make it then please post a picture,
thanks.

Sorry it's been a while since I posted on this thread, I was away at the Eastbourne magic convention last weekend and to be honest I forgot about it for this week.
It was late last night I thought.............oops.

So this is the last one from DVD 1 and to be honest I forgot about the bear holding onto the heart in this position.
I normally do the heart with the Teddy sitting where the join is in the 260 heart, so it was nice going back as I have a new one balloon dolphin design as well.

This is what I will be explaining, which with the heart shock twisted will be a little difficult but we will do our best.

For the heart inflate the red 260 fully, I then twisted two 1 finger bubbles at both ends of the balloon together.

Now to shape the heart, you have to warm up the outside area where I have added the black marker.
Please note you have to warm up the outer area of the 260 balloon and not the side of balloon where I have marked, I have added the non-inflated balloon just to show
you what the 260 should look like before you heat/friction twist the 260. From the non-inflated balloon the centre section is a 6 finger bubble.

Where I have marked the balloon you can either rub your hand over this section, squeeze the air backwards and forwards or breath onto the balloon.
You are heating up the outer side of the balloon to make the latex stretch and be more supply than the inside part of the balloon, this helps to shape the 260.

For fullness I do know a company that put's cellotape where I have put the non-inflated balloon as it will keep the shape
this way but please try to heat the balloon up and make the heart shape.

There is something similar called friction shaping, a little info is here on the forum, friction-twist-shaping-t1092.html (http://balloonchat.co.uk/friction-twist-shaping-t1092.html)

This will take some time to get but please keep practising, you will get there in the end.

For the classic teddy bear, inflate a 260 balloon and leave a soft knot, you have to roll the knot towards the end of the balloon later.
Leave a 6 finger un-inflated section on the 260, twist a 5 finger bubble, a 4 finger bubble, a 2 finger bubble, a 3 finger bubble, a 2 finger bubble, a 4 finger bubble.

The bubbles above are the nose, side of face, ear, top of head, ear, side of face.

In the picture I have tied these together just so I could take the photo.

Then twist only one of the 2 finger bubbles into a pinch/ear twist.

Twist the first and the last bubble together as in the second picture here.

This is where you roll the soft knot down towards the end of the balloon as it gives the end of the nose a little shaping as in the first picture.
The bubble will also be a 1 finger in length longer as well.

Push half of the nose bubble through the centre section of the teddies head, not all the way as part of this bubble acts as the back of the teddies head as well.

Which you will see in the next post.

Twist the second 2 finger bubble into a pinch/ear twist.

Here you can see the front and back of the head with the nose bubble sitting through the head section.

IMPORTANT, now this might only be important to me, but the knot of the teddy on the nose should be in the up position as the teddy will look happy.
If the knot is facing downwards you will have a sad looking teddy.

Twist a 1 finger bubble for the neck and then another 1 finger bubble pinch twisted to support the arms and hold the head up on the teddy.

You then need approx. two 5 finger bubbles and the second bubble gets twisted back into the pinch twist once you have wrapped it around the 260 heart shaped balloon.

You then need a 4 finger bubble for the body and then two approx. 5 finger bubbles for the bottom legs and you should have a 2 finger bubble left to twist the legs in place to the body.

Again so I could take the picture I tied these twists up just so you could see.

Wrap the 5 finger bubbles around the 260 heart balloon and use the 2 finger bubble to twist the legs and body of the teddy together.

In these pictures I did not have a neck bubble, depends what you think is more pleasing to your eye.

For the flowers, inflate a 3 finger bubble in a 260 balloon, make a tulip/apple twist, push the knot down into the balloon and grab the know with your other hand at the bottom of the 3 finger bubble. You have a choice here, either twist the balloon a few times and push the twists back into the centre of the bubble. This will hold it secure in place or you can tie the bottom stem of the flower around the twists under the 3 finger bubble and tie them together with a knot. This way the tulip twist will not un-twist and is safer.

More instructions and pictures here, tulip-apple-twist-t1106.html (http://balloonchat.co.uk/tulip-apple-twist-t1106.html)

Again push the knot up into the centre of the bubble for a cleaner look.

Add as many flowers as you would like and tuck in between the legs and the 260 heart balloon.

If you used 3/4 of a 260 it would end up with a shorter stem section and you may prefer that look?

Add some artwork.

That is what was on the DVD, I was struggling to take a picture as the heart was lop sided due to the weight ratio so I added the 260
flower balloon as a base which I thought added to the design.

I made a couple of one balloon dolphin's from 160's yesterday.
So thought I'd post them here as there are some one balloon dolphin's on this thread as well.
