Title: Setting up... Advice on Insurance etc...
Post by: Ine on April 06, 2013, 03:01:11 PM
Hi all!

I've been doing magic and balloon modelling for quite a while... But so far the only gigs etc I have done, have been for friends & family...

However, I'm now finally in the process of properly setting up! :-)

This is all very new to me though, hence I'd like to ask for some advice...
Aside from setting up as a sole trader & related tax stuf...

Q1; I know I'll need liability insurance.... But there are so many options out there, I have no idea where to get it...  So, considering you guys are in the same trade... any recommendations of a good place to get insurance at a reasonable price would be much appreciated!

Q2; is there anything else, that is essential to get/set up or look into?

Thanks in advance for any tips!
Ine

I don't know much about this but I remember reading a thread on the forum recently about public liability insurance etc. You can find it in Topic/Discussion of the month with the heading PLI and CRB.

hope this helps  :)

Hi there,

I have always had my public liability insurance covered by Equity.

However, as I am now firmly rooted in balloons, I have been looking for an organisation more balloon orientated, and was recommended BAPIA, the Balloon And Party Industry Allience.

I have just joined (Had an email from John this morning confirming membership) and included in the membership is Public liability insurance for £5 million.

You can check them out here http://www.bapiaonline.com (http://www.bapiaonline.com). Membership is £160.00 per year, or do as I did, and set up a standing order for £15.00 a month.

Hope this helps  :D

We have both Equity and Bapia..

Equity only gives you cover if you are there and its for entertainment and has rules about how you can join.. I know its changed a little but we had to have contracts to show we where working entertainers and its just you insured

Bapia has insurance that covers you for a lot of things even if you are no there.. as in Balloon Decor, venue dressing, candy carts etc.. and also gives discount on any training course it gets involved with.. and you get a box of decor balloon goodies when you join.. you also get cover for up to 5 people working with you under the employers policy you get (they dont have to be paid to be working with you)

Members of Bapia are getting up to £20 discount on the robbie furman days being promoted at present

There are lots of companies offering just public liability insurance, but remember to check they cover what you are offering
