graham i meant to do this a wile ago but hols etc any how using a light box gives a much better photo because you don't get any light reflections on the balloons it would be even better in a room with no windows and using lights out side the box not directly onto the balloons how ever to get a better back drop try using one of the photo editing programs i use photo-shop cut the model out move it to a new layer create a new layer behind pick a colour bucket fill with the colour of your choice & bingo
well alright there's a bit more to it than that but that is it in a nut shell it is worth learning & it's not that difficult hope you like them

I get a  Colored Poster Board you can get one at an Office Supply Store. Then I put it on the wall. You tape your balloon figure to the poster board and take the phote. Print the photes out as thumbnails. Then take them to the Office Supply store and get them laminatedand and binded. It cost me about $18.00 to make a four page balloon menue. The phote will look like this.

Great minds think alike although I am still struggling with my lightbox since it is a popup one but doesn't stay popped up very well   also I have very few external light sources in my house so I tend to stick the light box on the windowsill as the front of our house gets a lot of light in the afternoon.

I too use photoshop (elements anyway) to removed the background and I take it you have feathered the edges ... may I ask how much as I tried that and it was too much.

Hi YvonneH
when I cut the photo out I use the pen tool it can be a bit tricky to use at first till you get the hang of it but it gives much cleaner lines I feather 1 or 0 pixels
try using a couple of desk lamps with your light box just be sure to light the balloon model through the side back or top of the box & not direct putting a light box up is another job altogether lol it a knack you just have to persevere until you get the hang of it
