Title: Aug 2009 Model of the month (Racing Car)
Post by: Graham Lee on August 05, 2009, 06:14:03 PM
Here is the challenge for this month, the racing car. Fingers crossed that a few will have a go and I'll post the instructions when I get back from diamond jam at the end of the month.

As a little pointer there are two balloons in the main body of the car ;)

This is the first time I have ever tried to make a model from a picture.  I took a picture before I added the driver and stuff in case I burst something.
It isn't brilliant and I can see a few places where I went wrong BUT I was pleased with it for a first attempt.

It didn't look as bendy in real life.  Must be the angle I took the pictures.  :D

Here it is without driver:

And now with driver:

Hi Graham,

you said that you would post the instruction of your great car at the end of august.
Would you do that ? I wait every day for it :-)

And your motor bike "Model of the month" is soooo great , too.

I am able to twist a motor bike out of one 260, but I can't twist the model of september :-(

I am looking for a instruction, too.

Where can I get them please ?

Can you or someone give me a little bit help or a youtube video of it please ?

Greetings from germany,

Marc

Hi Marc, just replied to your PM to myself.
I have been very busy lately what with being away in Vegas for two weeks and then having to catch up with over 500 emails upon my return. I have two magic conventions to go to this month as well promoting Sempertex and then at the end of the month I'm off to China for 10 days performing my balloon magic act.
I will try and post asap but it does take me usually around 4/5 hours to write up the instructions with pictures etc and post onto the forum.

Could you have ago at making the model from the pictures and post your effort as I'm sure this would encourage others and some of the more experienced twisters on the forum will guide you if you are having any problems as were all more than happy to help  :D

OK, I don't know if there is any sort of time limit to getting these on here, but it's a pretty quiet Tuesday night and I decided to try this little car. See if you can spot my "mistakes". I like to refer to them as "innovations".

BTW, I find this may help me use up all my scrap balloons that I have been hoarding for years. May do some catching up each Tuesday....

Sometimes you just get days like this  :(  :o  Started to write the instrutions out and the computer crashed and then I start to resize the pictures and realise that I must have accidently turned the flash off my camera so have had to re shoot half the pictures again, still as they say keep smiling  :D

So fingers crossed, here are the instructions and apologies that we are a bit behind with them.

Leave 7 fingers un inflated and then start off by making the pinch twist that will hold the back wheels in place, then a 4 finger bubble and another pinch twist which will be the centre bubble for the top of the rear spoiler.

A 3 finger bubble followed by a 1 finger bubble and another 3 finger bubble to finish one side of the spoiler. For the other side do yet again another 3 finger bubble, 1 finger bubble and then the last 3 finger bubble.

Follow this with a 4 finger bubble down to the first pinch twist that will hold the back wheels in place.

From this pinch twist do a 3 finger bubble and then a 1 finger pinch twist

Followed by the last 3 finger bubble from the first balloon which goes around the pinch twist where the back tyres will fit later, tie off and discard the rest of the balloon.

The second balloon again is 7 fingers un inflated; twist a 4 finger bubble then a 1 finger pinch twist (which later will connect to the first balloon single pinch twist where the driver will sit)
Twist another 4 finger bubble and then two 1 finger pinch twists (this is where the front wheels will fix onto later) Tie the knot of the balloon into the two pinch twists.

You then twist a 3 finger bubble and a 1 finger pinch twist which is the centre of the front spoiler.

Twist a 3 finger bubble, a 1 finger pinch twist and yet one more 3 finger twist which connects back to the centre of the front spoiler pinch twist.

Repeat with a 3 finger bubble, 1 finger pinch twist and a 3 finger bubble for the other side of the spoiler.

Twist a 3 finger bubble around the two pinch twists and then finally do two 1 finger twists, the last one is made into a tulip/apple twist for the steering wheel. (Although if you look at the original picture of the car the steering wheel was two black pinch twists)

The tyres can either be made from one 360 black by inflating the balloon to an 8 finger bubble and then tulip/apple twist the whole balloon. You then split into two for both tyres.

I prefer to make the tyres separately although it will then take you two 360 black but you have more movement on the tyres so that it is easier to get them sitting and looking correctly. To do this just inflate the 360 to a 4 finger bubble and pinch twist, when you have two of these just tie them together loosely and manoeuvre into position. Repeat for the other set.

Making the tyres the other way and you can see there is not much give between the tyres.

Attach the tyres to the car. With the front tyre it sits better if there is a pinch twist at the top and bottom, you may also like to add an extra pinch twist to where the rear tyre fits. It may help to hold the car in a better shape?

Haha now I see where I went wrong.  At least I got the wheels right
Think if I make one now it might pass its MOT

The driver is made from a 160 with a 1 finger bubble for the body followed by a 1 finger pinch twist which will help to support the head later. Twist a 2 finger bubble, 1 finger for the hand, another 1 finger buble and a 2 finger bubble for the other arm and twist around the pinch twist, discard the rest of the balloon.

Tie the body bubble to the back of the two pinch twists in the middle of the car and wrap the steering wheel between the two 1 finger bubbles.

Twist a 2 finger bubble from the nipple end of the balloon and add markings accordingly.
You can use a heart balloon for the face which does add the nose detail as Janet has done.

Thanks, I think with a little more practice I could go semi-pro
Are you going to try the car? If so please post  :)
