Title: January Competition (Dinosaur)
Post by: Graham Lee on December 28, 2015, 09:19:56 PM
This coming month's competition challenge will be the dinosaur, a complimentary pack of balloons will be sent out in
every order in January for you to make the dinosaur and enter. If you do not buy from us no worries,
please make it and post just for fun. It's always nice to see a few variations.
The winner out of the hat in February can have a Balloon modelling DVD or a balloon calendar from Rob Driscoll if I have any left.

Someone on facebook was talking about a dragon, as I had a few dino's made and about the place I thought it might convert with some wings.

There are two quick links, the balloons required will be going out in the orders this month or can be picked up at the care & share day this coming wed at Bishops Stortford.

OOPS! I took the step by step pictures on the 28th Dec and just realised I have not added them to the site, will try to find time and do this tomorrow.
Another minor oversight.

Here are the instructions for the dinosaur, a little late though. I took the pictures over a week ago and for some reason
thought I had already posted the step by step details up onto the forum.

This is what you will get in the pack with a spare 260 lime green and a spare quick link just in case of a problem or two.

Inflate the lime green 260 leaving 5 fingers un-inflated, twist a 3 finger bubble followed by a 2 finger pinch twist.
Then twist two 3 finger fold twists.

Twist a 4 finger bubble and then a large 3 finger pinch twist, this is the top of the head pinch twist.
Twist another 4 finger bubble, twist this into the two 3 finger fold twists.

The knot at the top of the first 3 finger bubble gets twisted around the top of the head pinch twist,
you do have to pull the two 4 finger bubbles down slightly to connect,
the reason for the middle bubble to be smaller is to make the face a little rounder.

I then make the neck of the dinosaur a 10 finger bubble and discard the rest of the balloon.
You can make the neck as long or as short as is pleasing to your eye.

Inflate the first quick link, I used an old purple qualatex pump and inflated with 3 single strokes of the pump.

I tie the quick link end of the balloon with a knot or two so it can grip when we attach it to the 260 balloon.
Pull the end of the quick link tight and around the back of the head and twist into the 2 finger pinch twist.

When I tied the quick link I made a soft knot so I could pull the knot nearer to the nozzle end of the balloon.
Pull the end of the balloon under the quick link and tie this around the same pinch twist, I think the picture will help.

Inflate the white 260 for the eyes approx. to an 8 finger bubble, tie into the same pinch twist and make a 3 finger bubble.
Twist this into the top of the head pinch twist, as the eyes will be 3 finger bubbles this also helps to pull the two 4 finger bubbles
into a more rounded face structure.

Make another 3 finger bubble for the other eye and twist the white balloon into the back of the head pinch twist and discard the rest of the 260 balloon.

Position the top of the head pinch twist to sit in between both eyes, I rather like the look of the dinosaur like this.

Inflate the next 260 lime green leaving a 5 finger bubble, make a 3 finger fold twist.
(A 3 finger fold twist will be 6/7 fingers in length so when folded over will be a 3 finger fold twist)

Make another 3 finger fold twist.

Then make a 2 finger pinch twist, you then need a 5 finger bubble for one of the front legs.

Then two 3 finger large pinch twists.

Post by: Graham Lee on January 07, 2016, 09:08:24 PM
You then need a 6 finger bubble that loops back onto itself and ties back into the two 3 finger pinch twists.
The neck of the dinosaur will sit snugly into this 6 finger loop in a while.

Then make the other 5 finger front leg, there is enough balloon left to make another 3 finger fold twist
but DO NOT make this, just discard the rest of the balloon.
If you did use this balloon for the fold twist then the last balloon will have too much excess and for me the tail would be too long.

Inflate the next 6" quick link, I used 4 single strokes of the purple Qualatex pump for the body size.
Attach this to the 10 finger neck bubble of the dinosaur.

Twist the knot from the quick link and the neck of the dinosaur into the two 3 finger pinch twists,
arrange the pinch twists and the 6 finger loop bubble so the neck sits correctly.

Inflate the last lime green 260 and leave a 4 finger un-inflated section.

Make two 2 finger bubbles and then make these into two pinch twists,
I pull the end of the balloon over the centre section of the two bubbles and twist one bubble over as I go.
This gives you two pinch twists that are the same size with equal pressure in both.
You can just make two separate pinch twists if you like.

Attach these two pinch twists to the other end of the quick link.

Make a 5 finger bubble for the back leg and attach into the two 3 finger fold twists.

Make two more 3 finger fold twists for the feet of the dinosaur.

Then twist the last 5 finger bubble for the other back leg.

Make another 2 finger pinch twist, I prefer to have three pinch twists here, you might like two?

Then shock twist the tail a little to give it some shape.

Add some artwork to complete.

If you draw the bottom of the mouth to where the knot is pulled back underneath the quick link then the
dinosaur can be eating if you cut up two un-inflated balloons.

Hope the instructions worked out OK?

I look forward to seeing a few being made :)

Thanks for this Graham.  I found it easier to twist the eyes on before putting the muzzle on. I also twisted the two 3 finger folds for the back feet before I attached them to the front feet, then i just twisted them round like flower petals.  A great design that I'm sure is going to get a lot of use!!!

Glad it was of help. Did you forget to post the picture?
There are many ways to get from A to B, whatever works for everyone.
As I mentioned at the Bishops Stortford day, I make things that are pleasing to my eye, you may prefer a longer neck, larger feet, shorter tail, etc etc.

That is the fun with twisting, we all see things differently  :)

the hat to win a balloon modelling DVD. Competition closes 7th Feb and we announce the winner on the Feb 8th, that is if I do not forget  :)
