Title: Model of the Month October 2012 (Mermaid)
Post by: Graham Lee on October 02, 2012, 11:07:21 PM
I was looking through to see what the model could be this month and I came across this Mermaid and thought it looked OK and maybe not too difficult a challenge.

The face and body in the first two pictures are from 350's, I have put a model up made from 260's incase not everyone has 350's to hand to make the model.

Here's my mermaid...or rather Cody's mermaid.  It's a slight variation of Unicaw89's (Thanks Cody).  My usual mermaid is Mark Byrne's mermaid hat (Thanks Mark).  Anyway...please forgive the artwork...trying new things.  Hopefully there'll be another artwork class at T & S in Jan.

 Thanks,

  Michael

Think there must be two pinch twists under the neck bubble but it just didn't look right when I did that.  Will wait and see in instructions.

Here's my mermaid it is based on Cody's design with my tail design as he uses 350 and I don't have any of those (yet)

(The blue model my daughter is holding is a dolphin of her design, which she did about 80% herself including the pinch twist for the eyes.)

I put this Mermaid up as I was looking to get away from the pinch twist double chin look. Although out in the real world I use the pinch twist method because it's quick, works and the structure easily sits nicely. The head is made from a 350 tulip/apple twisted, that way the neck then looks more in proportion and is just another twist rather than the pinch twist look. It takes a bit longer and you do have to position everything correctly so that it all looks OK.

The first picture the mermaid on the left is just a four finger twist for the head and a 2 finger bubble for the neck. The one on the right is the tulip twisted head. Picture two on the tulip twist, (Mermaid on right) you can see it gives a slightly more protruding chin to her face. Took a back head shot so you can see the different hair style.

They have a White body and Ivory arms as I ran out of White 260 and did not want to go up the garden in the cold and dark tonight to get a new bag out.

Slightly late and while making the mermaid instructions I now have a different way to make this that I prefer. Will post instructions for the original and then will show pictures of the variation.

Head and Body.

Inflate a 350 near to the end of the balloon, approx 5 fingers in length, make a tulip/apple twist in the balloon. Then inflate the rest of the balloon to approx 8 finger bubble.
Title: Re: Model of the Month October 2012 (Mermaid)
Post by: Graham Lee on December 12, 2012, 08:39:11 PM
Twist the neck bubble into the balloon when attaching the arms, I twisted it before here and tied it up just to show what it should look like.
For these instructions I used a 160 for the arms, you may prefer to use a 260.
Inflate the 160 leaving 6 fingers un-inflated, make four 1/1.5 finger bubbles and twist the first bubble around the last for a hand.
Make a 6 finger arm bubble and then twist a 1 finger pinch twist.
Title: Re: Model of the Month October 2012 (Mermaid)
Post by: Graham Lee on December 12, 2012, 08:54:56 PM
Then make another 1 finger pinch twist followed by a 6 finger arm bubble and then the other hand, four 1/1.5 finger bubbles.
Attach the two pinch twists around the bottom of the 2 finger neck bubble made from the 350.

Hair, Inflate a Red 260 to 3/4 fingers un-inflated, twist a 1 finger bubble followed by a 4 finger bubble, 1 finger pinch twist.

Then twist a 4/5 finger fold twist back to the pinch twist just made, another 4 finger bubble which is twisted into the other 4 finger bubble and roll the 1 finger bubble between the two 4 finger bubbles to lock into place. You then need two 5 finger bubbles twisted back to the same position and locked into place.

Post by: Graham Lee on December 12, 2012, 11:26:25 PM
Wrap the remainder of the balloon tightly around the two 5 finger bubbles and twist into the centre of the hair section, you will then need to let some air out of the balloon to make the final 4 finger bubble that twists into the top of the hair pinch twist.
Attaching the hair, put the knot from the red 260 around the top of the neck 2 finger bubble.
Title: Re: Model of the Month October 2012 (Mermaid)
Post by: Graham Lee on December 12, 2012, 11:30:31 PM
Once wrapped around this section you then have to take the knot up to the top of the hair and wrap into the pinch twist, this makes this section sit a lot better, well I think it does,
hopefully you will as well? The 1 finger bubble then has to be pushed in between the two 4 finger bubbles again so it all sits nice and snugly. Take the top of the balloon coming out
of the 350 apple/tulip twist, pull tightly and wrap around the top pinch twist for the hair to hold the head in place.

The Tail, inflate a green 260, leaving 4 fingers un-inflated and twist a 4/6 finger fold twist.
Title: Re: Model of the Month October 2012 (Mermaid)
Post by: Graham Lee on December 12, 2012, 11:37:01 PM
Make two more fold twists the same size you decide the first one should be. I made a 12 finger bubble and twisted two 2 finger pinch twists, the tail did look a little long so you may want to do a 10 finger bubble, it's all trial and a lot of error, well it is with me  :)  :D  Discard the rest of this balloon. Attach a new 260 green into the three fold twists leaving 3 fingers un-inflated.
Spiral this down to the two pinch twists and wrap around, try to put as many spirals in as possible.
Title: Re: Model of the Month October 2012 (Mermaid)
Post by: Graham Lee on December 12, 2012, 11:49:18 PM
Tie the rest of the 260 green tail into the two pinch twists to form a large circle, split this into two and then put this twist also into the two pinch twists.
Title: Re: Model of the Month October 2012 (Mermaid)
Post by: Graham Lee on December 12, 2012, 11:53:52 PM
I then put two twists into the two loops slightly off centre to give a more natural look. When attaching the 350 body to the tail deflate the 350 to a size you are happy with the look off, mine was approx a 4/5 finger bubble. Now to the bra, inflate a 260 to a size you are happy with  :)  :D  :D  :D I think I did a 3 finger bubble that was then split into two, the 3 finger bubble I have a knot at both ends to keep the air in place.

The knot is on the lilac 260 centre just so I could take the picture, I normally just twist the bra in half, twist a few times so that it stays in place better. Tie around the 350,

Playing with the mermaid design, getting ready for next month actually and the complimentary balloons, funny how you look to add to designs that are 30 months old.
The first picture the tail looks too solid and static, has no movement or flow. At the moment I think picture two is better.

Another bra top variation, I did a 4 finger tulip twist and then added the two pinch twists into the centre to separate either side.
I changed the hair slightly, I put a knot into the 160 at the back.

I like the look of the bra on this one, with the two central pieces hanging down, it is not tied at the back but the 160 looped all the way around from both sides and then hooked around the central pinch twist. You might get comments about why the mermaid has 3 boobs but if the pinch twist is small enough hopefully not, only one way to find out.

I have just re-done the instructions for this mermaid, this is volume two as the original instructions have been up some 30 months and I did not like the look of the original tail.
I have taken 96 pictures so will write some text and start posting the instructions later tonight.

This is the one I will explain so you can choose either this one or the original I made a while ago that the instructions start from page 4.

The balloons supplied will be to make this one here.

Here we go then with take two of how to make the mermaid, this is with using the balloons in the complimentary packs that we have sent out with balloon orders for May.
If you post your mermaid that you made on this thread, may-comp-balloons-t9859.html (http://balloonchat.co.uk/may-comp-balloons-t9859.html)
It will then be entered into the draw at the end of the month to win a Patrick van de Ven DVD, you only get the balloons to make the mermaid, not the sea scene as well.

Inflate the blush 360 to a 6 finger bubble and make an apple/tulip twist, use the un-inflated part of the 350 to tie a knot so the tulip/apple twist will not come undone.
Re-inflate the 350 for a 2 finger neck bubble and tie a knot in the 350.
Title: Re: Model of the Month October 2012 (Mermaid)
Post by: Graham Lee on April 29, 2015, 03:53:47 PM
Then inflate the 350 again and make a 6/7 finger bubble for the mermaid body.
The 260 red inflate and leave approx. 7 fingers of balloon un-inflated, I do stretch this balloon before I inflate it, run it through your thumb and forefinger, you can then also stretch the balloon once it is inflated to give a little more balloon to play with. Make two 1 finger pinch twists, then a 1 finger bubble followed by a 1 finger pinch twist.
Title: Re: Model of the Month October 2012 (Mermaid)
Post by: Graham Lee on April 29, 2015, 03:59:56 PM
The knot of the 350 will get tied into the red pinch twist, make a 4 finger bubble followed by a 1 finger pinch twist and then another 1 finger bubble, this twist then goes around
the 350 blush below the neck and above the body. Wrap the 260 red around the blush and then make another 1 finger bubble and twist this back into the pinch twist.
Title: Re: Model of the Month October 2012 (Mermaid)
Post by: Graham Lee on April 29, 2015, 04:05:32 PM
You then twist a 4 finger bubble and a bubble between a 1 to 2 finger bubble and the second twist will go around the two pinch twists that you made at the beginning of the 260.
Make a 2 finger fold twist for the front of the hair and then repeat down the other side with the smaller bubble first and then the 4 finger bubble for the other side of the hair
and twist this into the bottom pinch twist by the back of the neck.
Title: Re: Model of the Month October 2012 (Mermaid)
Post by: Graham Lee on April 29, 2015, 04:11:54 PM
The rest of the balloon is put into a large loop fold twist and twisted around the pinch twist again at the bottom of the neck.
Using the 160 blush or you might prefer to use a 260 for the arms, make a 1 finger bubble and a 2 finger fold twist. Push the I finger bubble through the fold twist so the hand will
not come undone. I made my arms about a 6/7 finger bubble, you might like them a little longer though. Then put a 2 finger pinch twist into the blush, measure the other arm
the same size as your first so for me that was 6/7 finger bubble and then a 2 finger fold twist and deflate the balloon leaving your last 1 finger bubble and push this through
the fold twist to stop it coming un done.
Title: Re: Model of the Month October 2012 (Mermaid)
Post by: Graham Lee on April 29, 2015, 04:19:17 PM
Wrap the blush pinch twist around the 350 between the neck and body, the bra I made from a 160, if you look back at this thread I have 2/3 different bra designs to choose from
but here I made a 3 finger bubble in the middle of the 160 and tied a knot at either side. I then put a puff of air into the in-inflated part of the 160 and twisted the 3 finger
bubble in half. I then wrapped one side of the un-inflated 160 around the back of the 350 blush and looped it around the centre of the 160 in the middle of the bra section.
I then did the same with the other side. The two ends of the 160 might sit one up and one down, just tuck the 160 going upwards down the back of the bra between the bra
and the body and you should hopefully end up like in the picture. I then made two more knots so the two 160's hanging down were not too long and cut the excess off.
The 160 around the back needs to be pulled pretty firmly but not overly, you are trying to get the bra to stay in place and not move about, possibly glue dots would help here?
There are 2 160's going around the back of the 350 body.
Title: Re: Model of the Month October 2012 (Mermaid)
Post by: Graham Lee on April 29, 2015, 07:27:45 PM
Then inflate 3 green 160's, two leaving a 3 finger un-inflated section and one with 2 fingers un-inflated, this one is left till last.
Twist two 3 finger fold twist into the first 160 and one 3 finger fold twist into the second 160. These then get twisted together,
the longer of the 160 then has a 2 finger pinch twist added underneath the three 3 finger fold twists.
Then add the longest 160 to the three fold twists.
Title: Re: Model of the Month October 2012 (Mermaid)
Post by: Graham Lee on April 29, 2015, 07:36:00 PM
I like to have the pinch twist as a catching point for when you start to plait the three 160 balloons as in picture one.
This balloon will be the centre balloon for the plait. You then plait the three balloons to approx. 20 fingers in length.
In the finished picture my mermaid tail is about 25 fingers long which makes the two bottom tail fins a little on the short side.
You have to decide what is pleasing to your eye.
Once at the desired length of tale twist the three 160's together.
Title: Re: Model of the Month October 2012 (Mermaid)
Post by: Graham Lee on April 29, 2015, 07:41:17 PM
Make two 2 finger pinch twists in the two shorter 160's. The longer 160 will make the tail fins. Stretch the longest 160 and tie into a big loop back into the two pinch twists,
then split the loop in half and it is this twist that then goes around the two pinch twists making a figure of eight.
Title: Re: Model of the Month October 2012 (Mermaid)
Post by: Graham Lee on April 29, 2015, 07:46:11 PM
Then split both of these circles into approx a third and two thirds to give the look as in picture one. Attach the body onto the tail of the mermaid and hopefully you have
something a little similar to the mermaid shown. I then added a little sea scene to add to the look. If you do make this please post a picture or two, it would be nice to
see and you might encourage others to post and you will go into the prize draw to win the Patrick van de Ven DVD that is on offer for May.

Good luck.
