Hi guys just had my renewals through for my insurance and breakdown cover and it has dawned on me that I have always had the basic level of breakdown cover available as before I started my own business I had always worked in an office within 10 miles from home and as my hubby is good with cars he could always get it started for me.

However, now I'm self employed I often take jobs considerably more than 10 miles from home and feel I should increase my cover to ensure that even if my car broke down I could still get to my job even if it was late and not only that the cover I am looking at would give me a courtesy car if they couldn't fix mine so I wouldn't be car less for work.

My question is can I write the cost off against tax?  My logic is (which I admit may be flawed) is that if I wasn't running my own business I would not need higher than the basic level of cover and I only need the higher level due to my work.  The added problem then comes that my hubby and I get joint breakdown cover as it is cheaper but I also do use his car on ocassion if I have lots of stuff to get to a job or when I am painting and have another painter coming with me.  If anyone knows anything about this sort of stuff I would be grateful for a pointer in the right direction.

As it is I don't really need to count this off against my tax as my expenses already a hugely excessive from starting up with the décor and not having earned anything back from it yet

Have a look at Tesco insurance, their cover and breakkdown is very reasonable.

I always claim my AA cover back, I also have extra car cover with my bank account
Yes I have one of those accounts that give me travel/health insurance and all sorts of other cover for a small monthly payout.

Regards the courtesy car have you checked out how long it would take to arrange.

Experience has shown that it can take a long time, so long that you cannot make the show.

No but at the end of the day I can only do so much to get to a job on time and as my car is not that old it should not be something I hope to rely on any time soon and I am looking at the level of cover more to get my car home for my hubby to fix or at least our own garage that we trust.

Realistically if my car broke down that badly on the way to a job I have yet to have a breakdown service that came out within 30 mins anyway and the likelihood of them getting is sorted straight away and me back on the road would probably mean I would miss the booking anyway.  However, I would feel happier knowing I have done all I can to try and get going as soon as humanly possible.
