I had my first go at carving soap today. The intention is to transfer the skill to wood at some point. I followed a youtube video by a gentleman called Gene Messer. Really good fun to be had carving soap  :D

Looks good, could it be done with a potato?

I imagine Graham that the principal can be applied to most solid things that you can cut. I reckon carrots would carve well and be a bit less wet/slippy than potatoes.

Try a swede or a turnip Stuart, they are bigger that carrots but drier than potatoes.

I did this many, many years ago as well.  You are doing a great job but I think you might be wise to stick with carving soap rather than vegetables - just because of the longer shelf life lol.

Stuart, I too evolved from soap to wood and these are some of my efforts at "Love Spoons".  There is a story behind the "Love Spoon" but I just liked the designs.  At the bottom of the picture is "The ball in a cage" carving that is done with one piece of wood.  Great fun to do and very challenging.

These are great Millie, exactly the sort of thing I hope to be able to do. Next holiday I get I shall hopefully have a go in wood. Thanks so much for posting your picture - it is always good to know someone else out there shares similar passions and you were obviously good at it, though you maybe don't do it anymore.  :D if I ever do complete a project in wood I will certainly post it here

Here is the first venture into wood. It started as a forked twig. There is much to learn an improve but I thought I should follow up on my post and Millie's response.
