when the are inflated they create the number with out this they dont sit flat. It also means you can link them together to make a chain.

Its great that you are giving table centre a go I would just say think about line of sight across the table (the 646 is a bit large).
the best thing is to place your elbow on the table and the place chin on your hand if you can see clear across the table without moving its fine.
If it does obstruct the view people will tend to take them of the table so they can chat or at least moan about them.

Just a bit of friendly advice. This is all covered in the fundamentals courses from the likes of Qualatex may be worth you getting on one if you would like to do decor work.
