Here are a couple of variations I made out of Mr. Boma's lion (adorable, thank you Mr. Boma).  I made one with  a bigger mane and used only the head, sitting on a six petals flower bracelet for the second one.

As for your twins, children usually prefer simpler designs (think of Peppa Pig for example)
I think because they are closer to how they would draw them themselves
