I did actually talk with Wim about having a chat room when we talked about how the forum should look as other sites seem to all have them.
The template on this one that I purchased (& paid extra for so that we didn't have to have all those annoying adverts popping up) does not have the facility.
From memory I think it's something that we need to add as an extra,
will have to speak with Wim again as I can't really remember what the outcome was.

Graham, I hope you mean you have only payed money for the server as this software that is the forum (PHPBB) is free and people are not allowed to sell this software.
I assume you talk about renting the space on the server....

A chat room is not "standard" with this forum and we will have to use other software if you want a chatroom. I'll take a look around this week, look at the links provided and get back to you graham. Maybe there is even free chatroomsoftware available, I have never looked for it......

I'm not sure a chat room is a good idea at the moment as I think we need to get more members 1st and concentrate on growing what we already have. on other forums the chat seems to talk something away from the forum it self with only a small amount of twisters taking part. Having said that I enjoy chatting to twisters on my web cam on msn messenger and tokbox if you want an invite please send me a pm.

I personally agree with Dave.
Also this part "Having said that I enjoy chatting to twisters on my web cam on msn messenger and tokbox if you want an invite please send me a pm."
So if someone wants to add me, just send me a PM.

Dave, as a user of a chat room on another forum I have to agree with you in part.  It's true that only a small number of members use the chat room.  Just like only a small percentage of members ever take the time to post anything on the forum (or any forum for that matter) and like how there are lots of lurkers that never even become members of the forum(s).

Here are the main issues with the chat room on the other forum that might explain some things:
1) No one wants to be the first one in the chat room only to be left twiddling their thumbs waiting to see if anyone else has the time to join them. So if no one wants to be the first in, how do you get anyone to go to the chat room unless it's prearranged?
2) Typing.  Many are just not fast typists and feel that they just can't keep up.  That by the time they have typed out their remark, the chat topic could have already changed.
3) Spelling and typos. Many of us are horrible spellers and feel a bit self-conscience about it and even when we do know how to spell something correctly, our hands type in things of their own accord.
4) Trying to keep up with more than one conversation at a time.  Some find it nearly impossible to keep up even when chatters use different font colors to separate their remarks from someone else's.
5) The chat room that I use doesn't like everyone's operating systems.  Many people have tried to join the chat only to be 'kicked out' time and time again because the chat program doesn't handle their operating system.  Besides this being very irritating, most don't know the shortcut to getting back into chat so they try and wait the 5 minutes so that their chat ID will be 'put to sleep' and they can get back into chat.  Most give up and I can't say as I blame them.
6) This may come as a shock, but many entertainers are shy and find ordinary conversations hard to conduct.  While they would enjoy lurking in the background and 'listening in' to the conversation, they would find it hard to contribute to the conversation itself.  The chat program in the other forum that I use 'puts users to sleep' (logs them out) if they don't post every 5 minutes or so.

Even taking into consideration all those negatives I mention above, I still enjoy chatting with other entertainers in the chat room instead of using something like Skype.  While in the chat room, I can still continue to work on whatever project(s) I've got going here at the house without disturbing the chatters.  My dog's barking only bothers me.  I don't have to take my allergy meds so that I don't cough in everyone's ear.  I can lounge in my comfy PJs and no one knows. I don't have to clean up my work area and living room so that others can't see how messy it gets.  I can go take a powder and no one knows.  Well anyway, you get the idea.

Just some of my thoughts,
